On Friday evening I went to a retirement party. The person retiring had worked for London Underground for 44 years!
That is an incredible amount of time to devote to one company and got me thinking about why so many employees of London Underground "stick around". I'm a mere boy of just over 17 years service on the job, but if anyone would have said to me, at the age of 18, that I would have worked for the same company for 17 years I would have probably laughed in their faces!!
In my 17 years I have actually enjoyed coming to work for about 15 of them (I currently really enjoy coming to work - those two years I didn't are way behind me now). I wonder how many people outside of London Underground can honestly say that about work! I think that is why people stick with London Underground, because when you become bored with what you do there is always somewhere else you can go to work, either in a different environment or a different role.
I mean if you hate a job with a passion then you surely have to move on to preserve your sanity, don't you?
