Employee Relations...........

I spent a very interesting day today on an Employee relations course (yes, I was surprised how this subject could be interesting too)!!!!

One of the advantages of being in my position within the company is that you are able to get fairly frequent contact with the real senior managers. Today I had the pleasure of the company of Jerry Duffy our Employee Relations Director. He's a brash scotsman but rather likeable and he was sharing with us some details about how the pay negotiations with the trade unions went to secure our 3 year pay deal a few weeks ago.

Interestingly ASLEF - one of the Train Drivers unions - rejected 3 days leave or 3 days pay (over £1000) for the flexibility of an extra 30 minutes work from time to time for it's drivers, to scupper the late night working at weekends. The thought occurs to me how many of it's members were aware of this? He also revealed that he likes Bob Crow of the RMT and feels that there will be a real opportunity to work in partnership with him and his union in the near future.

To answer your question about ASLEF, as far as I know all of the drivers at my depot were aware of the three days (or equivalent pay), and I would assume that the same was true for all other depots. The majority (at my depot, at least) were behind the unions in rejecting this part of the pay deal as we felt it was being forced upon us with total disregard for our opinions. No doubt the later running issue will rear its head again before the next mayoral election.

In my opinion, the Mayor made a huge tactical error in promising a date for its introduction, effectively forcing LUL to link it to the pay deal in order to push it through in time. All that the unions had to do was sit back and watch as the mayor's self-imposed deadline approached.

All along, ASLEF and RMT demanded independent negotiations so that all of the relevent issues could be discussed, and, if later running is to be introduced within the timescale of this pay deal, that is what will have to happen.

Maybe you could enlighten us on the CSS bonus. I have been informed the chances of getting it this year are remote.

Also off topic your were involved in the DSM/DMT interviews how do you think the people performed.

It just seems a very good addition to the pay packet for very little in return, for everyone to turn it down!

London Underground made a huge error in offering it apparently and feel that they have got away with it now!

One thing that is certain is that the kind of offer on the table for the later working will not be repeated by the company.
